Saturday was a busy day on the Rice campus. Masterson arrived from Chattanooga to find faculty and students gathered in opposition against him.

At 10:30 A.M., students and faculty gathered in the gymnasium for a teach-in. At this meeting, students and faculty members on either side of the issue spoke about the ongoing crisis. The student body also voted, 951-7, to support the resolution that the faculty passed the day before.

After the teach-in, the crowd marched to Lovett Hall, near Cohen House where Masterson was giving a press conference. Masterson then spoke to the gathered students and faculty, and made it clear that he had no intention of resigning.

Later that afternoon, Masterson met with student leaders from 2:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., and again from 10:30 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. to discuss the situation and attempt to reach a compromise.

The pages below are from the Baker Vitis, a newsletter published at Baker College. They summarize the events of the previous day and explain the students' intent to protest the Masterson appointment.
