About the Project

This project intends to extract the addresses and other information from The Red Book of Houston as a means to visualize the people and places described in the book.

The corresponding Story Map contains information like migration to Houston, where teachers lived in relation to schools, and the locations of churches and Black-owned businesses. When available, there is also more detail about people showcased in the book.

We hope that placing all of these addresses on a map will help make this slice of Black life in 1915 come alive for the viewer.
