Remembrance Flowers for Aaaron Scheerhoorn

Aaron Scheerhoorn was a twenty-eight year old man who was killed on December 10, 2010, after being chased and stabbed in front of Blur Bar in Montrose. After Aaron was stabbed he was able to get away and run to the front of Blur Bar where he begged the doormen to help him, however they turned him away. This gave the murderer time to catch up to Aaron and attack him again. Aaron later died in the hospital from his injuries. According to Sheerhoorn’s friends, dozens of them gathered to honor him after his death and subsequently formed the Aaron Scheerhoorn Foundation For Change. A main goal of the foundation was to enter into a safe haven agreement with Montrose bars, to encourage business to open their doors to people fleeing in danger. [1]

Scheerhoorn’s case also offers a study in criminal justice reform.  At first, Lydell Grant was found guilty of Aaron’s murder and sentenced to a life in prison.  In 2019, DNA evidence subsequently indicated that Grant is innocent. That evidence connected a different suspect to the killing, who has since confessed.
