Shante Thompson
Shante Thompson was a 34 year old trans woman who was fatally shot and killed in Midtown Houston, along with her friend Willie Sims on April 10th, 2016. It appeared that they were both beaten with a crowbar or tire iron before being shot. The initial news report that was broadcast on ABC-13 misgendered and deadnamed Shante Thompson and wasn't changed until they were called out for it multiple times. [12] (Deadnaming is the act of referring to a transgender person's birth name instead of their chosen name.)
A few days after the death of Shante Thompson family, allies, and supporters gathered at City Hall to remember those who were lost in the shooting. In addition to honoring Shante and Willie, the vigil also honored the Texas trans people that were lost in the year of 2016. The vigil also called attention to the transphobic media coverage of the murder produced by ABC 13 and KPRC 2. [12]
