Montrose is a residential area that has developed into a well-known art district in Houston. There are many shops, bars, and food areas. There are also many walls with art murals that support the city of Houston. It is a community that holds and entertains people from all walks of life.

Specifically within Montrose, a gay community has developed. Montrose is home to various gay bars that have been a fun place for all people of Houston. The Montrose Mining Company, one of Houston’s oldest gay bars, and possibly the most well-known, was located here. [6] Additionally, a Houston artist, Scott Swoveland, was known for painting murals in the Montrose area, specifically on the window of a bar called Mary’s. Also within Montrose, there are health clinics and centers for members of the LGBT community to seek help. The Montrose Center is one such place that provides counseling, wellness programs and behavioral health and supports systems. The Montrose Center's vision is to empower, "our community, primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families, to enjoy healthier and more fulfilling lives." [5] There have also been various hate crimes within Montrose and the surrounding Houston community have sparked numerous protests that have taken place in Montrose.
