The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 10 (1985) is a work in three movements. It was commissioned by the University of Texas Institute for Texas Cultures for the Texas Sesquicentennial. The first performance with members of the San Antonio Symphony under the direction of George Winters took place in February 1986.

The Elegy to the Warriors, Op. 12
About this work:
The Elegy to the Warriors, Op. 12 (1986) is another large-scale work commissioned in honor of the Texas Sesquicentennial. Written for two baritone voices and chamber orchestra, the piece was premiered by conductor George Winters along with members of the San Antonio Symphony.
A recorded excerpt of the Elegy to the Warriors is taken from the premiere performance at the San Fernando Cathedral on June 20, 1986. Baritones Neil Wilson and Roger Lind are the soloists featured in this recording.
In five movements, Elegy uses texts from Santa Anna's autobiography The Eagle; the diary of Enrique de la Pena, an officer in the Mexican Army; the Texas Declaration of Independence; and William Travis' famous letter from the Alamo. The final movement features an original poem by Robert Avalon.

Concerto for Flute, Harp and Strings, Op. 30
About this work:
Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Strings, Op. 30 (1998) is Robert Avalon's last completed large-scale work. The piece was commissioned by Austin flutest Megan Meisenbach and harpist Mary Golden. The work was premiered in September 1999, at Stude Concert Hall, Rice University, Houston, Texas. Larry Rachleff conducted this performance. Centaur Records released a recording of the work along with the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in 2000.
