About the project
This exhibit provides information on the history of the Convict Leasing system in Sugar Land and the advocacy concerning the remembrance of those involved. The Convict Leasing project is part of Rice’s Houston Action Research Team (HART) program. The project began in May 2015 following the donation of archival materials by Reginald Moore, founder and head of the Texas Slave Descendants Society. The items in the archive were digitized and described by Rice undergraduates Alexandra Franklin, Ryan Deal, and Breland Coleman. Amanda Focke of the Woodson Research Center assisted with the preparation of documents for presentation in Omeka and uploaded the collection to the digital archive. An advising team consisting of Dr. Alan Steinberg, Dr. Lora Wildenthal, and Jay Ford provided essential guidance and support.
