Faculty meeting

Faculty gathered in the Chemistry Amphitheater around 4 P.M., where Herbert Allen officially announced the Masterson appointment. News of the selection was already widespread by this point, but the details were unclear.

After Allen's announcement, Franz Brotzen, the chairman of the faculty-student advisory committee, confirmed that the Trustees had not consulted with his committee about the decision.

When George Richter, Dean of Graduate Studies, praised the appointment and moved to adjourn the meeting, many faculty members objected vocally.

Before the meeting, several faculty members had drafted a resolution opposing the procedure used in the selection and collected signatures from their colleagues. This resolution was read by Joseph Ward at the meeting, and voted upon by the faculty.

Chancellor Carey Croneis then declared the meeting adjourned.

The faculty resolution

The resolution above was drafted by faculty members shortly before the meeting. Signatures were collected in the departments and at the door of the Chemistry Amphitheater.

At the meeting, Joseph Ward, Professor of English, read the resolution and the list of 61 signatures. Many were surprised by how many respected professors had signed the resolution: it meant that the issue at hand was serious, and not the initiative of "known radical" faculty alone.

After the resolution was read, faculty members voted to split it into two parts to be voted on: one part opposing the method through which Masterson was selected, and the other part asking the Trustees to reconsider the appointment. The first passed almost unanimously, and the second passed 91-57.
