Roy M Huffington, Inc. (RMHI) which would become better known as Huffco began its existence in the United States at the end of the 1950s. Originally as its founder himself expressed, Huffco did not profit "a red cent" in its initial stages of development. Eventually the company turned a profit finding oil successfully in seventeen of its eighteen wells and turned its eye to the international market.

Huffco studied these markets, but one in particular caught the founder's interest: Indonesia. Using data from materials such as maps and geological studies, Huffington noticed that Indonesia seemed to share similarities to the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States. He also noticed that at that time (the mid 1960s) Indonesia was essentially an untapped market.

Though it took time, Huffco found its inceptive success with liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Indonesia and would begin what is referred to as the Indonesian Joint Venture. From this spearhead, Huffco expanded into several divisions and subsidiaries while also focusing on bringing LNG to other markets such as Bangladesh, Turkey, Nigeria, and Trinidad & Tobago.

While RMHI/Huffco is no longer an active oil and gas company, its legacy remains apparent both in Houston history as well as the overall annals of the oil and gas industry.
