Assin Manso Slave River Site

Occupying land that once hosted a major slave trading entrepot, the Assin Manso Slave River Site allows visitors to retrace the journey of Africans subjected to the slave trade. The location linked northern slavers and slave markets with European buyers on the coast. Enslaved people partially recovered from their already arduous journey here, receiving their last African bath in the river. This was not an act of kindness, as it was aimed at improving the health – and therefore value – of captives prior to a forced march to their eventual sale at coastal forts. Once this brief stay at the river ended, most enslaved Africans would soon be subject to the wholly foreign world of diasporic slavery.
