Cape Coast

No fewer than 110,000 enslaved Africans endured Cape Coast Castle as their “gate of no return” before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas. While the location switched imperial hands over the centuries, it is particularly emblematic of Britain's leading role in the slave trade from West Africa. As such, it features in discussions on both African slavery and the efforts of diasporic people to recover lost transatlantic connections.
