A campus-wide poll was taken from 8 A.M. to 3 P.M. on Monday. Students and faculty voted on whether they approved of the procedure used in the Masterson selection, and whether they approved of the choice that the Trustees had made.
At 11 A.M., a meeting of Rice graduate students was held in the library to discuss the ongoing controversy.
Throughout the day, students continued to ensure that everyone was informed of the latest news. Flyers like the one from KOWL below advertised the campus radio, and the Thresher began publishing a special daily edition. Within the residential colleges, student leaders also put together and posted bulletins giving the latest updates.
At the same time, protesters were worried and frustrated by the coverage the crisis was receiving in the press. Local Houston papers and others across the country condemned the protests, and some even wrote that Rice students were on the verge of rioting.
In response, students began a campaign to address media bias. They put together information packets and urged the student body to write home and explain the situation from their perspective.
Groups outside of campus also voiced their opinions on the ongoing crisis. The Rice University Chaplains wrote in support of the protests against Masterson, whereas the Association of Rice Alumni released a statement favoring the Trustees and asking that the Rice community unite behind the Masterson appointment.
