Born and raised in Vietnam, Mai Tran came to the United States at the age of 18 after the country fell to communism. She joined her sister in Houston in 1981. Her first job was on the assembly line at Texas Instruments. She started her own cosmetology business in 1988. She met and married her husband in the United States, and they have one son.
